After an incredible season, riddled with controversy and interrupted by none other than, Miss Rona – Miss Rona – Miss Rona – Miss Rona, we have reached the finale of Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race where only three queens remain in the running to become the next drag superstar.
As we all know, RuPaul usually hosts the finale live in Los Angeles – an experience that is not to be missed. The Dirt Squirrel team was lucky enough to attend the live taping of the Season 8 finale and it is remarkable to watch RuPaul produce and perform on the spot live in front of a huge audience. With a live finale being out of the question, drag race fans have been left wondering exactly what they’re in for?
It has been reported that this season’s finale won’t be just another awkward zoom call, but instead will feature “boundary pushing” technology that will elevate each queen’s final performances to new technological heights! If it’s anything like Katy Perry’s performances of Daisies on this year’s American Idol final, we are in for a treat! After all, lip sync show downs were forever ruined their first year when Season 9’s winner, Sasha Velour littered the stage with rose petals in a well-calculated ru-veal!
With only three finalists instead of the usual four, fans have been left wondering what the format will look like. Luckily, we might have some insight on the matter. Apparently, we will be getting five lip sync performances and the format will go something like this:
The top 3 will perform one song each by the same artist.
Crystal does a song
Gigi does a song
Jaida does a song
From these first performances, Ru will choose one queen for the final lip-sync.
The remaining two queens will have to duke it out in a lip-sync showdown for the second spot in the final two.
The winner of this lip-sync faces off against the winner of round 1 and, “may the best woman, win”!
Regardless of the many obstacles this season had to overcome, it has proven to be one of the best seasons to date with a cast of incredibly talented, well-rounded, queens who slayed the house down every single episode. One could argue that just about any queen in the top 8 would have been deserving of the fourth spot and a chance to lip-sync for the crown. They certainly would have done it justice. However, the remaining three are standouts in the drag department and as Ru always says, “they’re all winners”! We can’t wait to see what they bring to the table, not only at the finale, but in the future!
Who has your favourite queen been this season? Who are you rooting for? And what do you think of this new finale format?
